I have been refurbishing many of the parts for the chassis and drive train well as buying the rest of the parts I need to put my 70 Chevelle together starting next week.
I am am down to buying the exhaust pipes and mufflers. My engine is a 502 with manual transmission. I am going with 3” pipes and running the tailpipes out the back in the original location. I would like to have a system that is not to loud at idel and all around driving but fine with being loud when I get on it.
Looking for recommendation.
I will post pictures of the build as it progresses over the next 2-3 months.
Thanks
Tim

I did 3" Pypes "race pro" mufflers. It is nice and thumpy at idle, quiet enough to have a conversation on the highway, and really screams at 7000rpm. :)
I wasn't able to fit the tailpipes through my watts link, so I dumped it in front of the axle and I have a brand new set of Pypes 3" Chevelle tailpipes left over if you're interested in piecing something together rather than buying a complete kit. (Pypes universal X-pipe kit is the front half of a Chevelle kit)

I have race pros on the Camaro too and they are quiet at idle and mellow on the road, but let people know you are there when at wot, like Derek says.
I have Dynomax on the '38 and can't remember if they are chambered or flow thru. I thought they were quieter in the car than the Thrush that were on it, but the wife STILL didn't like the noise inside the tin can, so I wrapped them, and the pipes, with high heat pipe wrap and they got noticeably quieter in the car. They are mellow at idle and have a little rap at road speed, but still bark out the back with some throttle.

The Pypes system I installed on that 72 of Mikes sounded nice. It was a 2.5 quiet at idle but not to loud when you got on at WOT.
