It never occurred to me until today. 70 and earlier Chevelles have teeny tiny 5" headlights while us with 71/72s have big ol' 7" ones. I will avoid any allusions to adult humor (as you should too) and say only this:
It never really was something I ever thought about. I guess I assumed that they all used the same lamp, though logically it makes sense to have smaller ones to fit them as pairs.

Never did figure out why they went back to two lamps after switching to four in 1958.
Must be for design options?

A few thoughts are, 2 lamps are less expensive to install on the line than 4...it gives the front a different appearance after 7 years of 4. I've read where the '70 Monte front end was originally designed for the '70 Chevelle, but was declined by upper brass, thus the creation of a different, "luxury" model of A body to compete with the BOP cars....
Seems the 2 headlight system was easier to use on both models the next year. Anyone know if the '71 core supports interchange between Monte and Chevelle ? That would be a huge cost saving for GM right there.

There were about 8 different core support Pt# for Monte and Chevelle for 70-72, most 71-72 interchanged, there were core sups. for small V8 and 6cyl. and for A/c and big V8s.

And try to find original 5" bulbs. The only choice seems to be to convert to halogen or LED.

Pretty sure I have a cardboard box full of both 5 and 7" New!
Couldn't throw them away when we pulled from inventory.
Plus a bunch of 5" used, may even have some t-3 (untested)

I would take VERY GOOD care of any 5" you would allow me to beg barrow or steel, or buy as I have 3 four head light cars.
But I'm sure you have plenty of homes for those 5"er.

I will find and check inventory. Pulled from stock 6-8 years ago.

Well, uh... if you want REALLY bright hi-beams, aircraft still use the 5" sealed beams in the landing lights, and they're available in 12V. Cops don't like them - don't ask me how I know.
