Is there a way to check out the carrier to see what the condition it is in?  On a casual inspection the bearings and race appear to be good along with the single sims for each side.  The cross shaft looks and feels ok.  A visual inspection of the outside  shows no cracks, marks, etc.  Should I pull the springs and look at the spider gears and clutch plates?  This is a 30140 series 3 carrier. I don't know the date.  Thanks

Yes it would be worth pulling the clutches out to check them and reshim them back up as they are going to have some wear. Shim kits are available through Toms differential. Would suck to put it all together to find out it only spins one wheel. If you go on youtube there should be videos related to doing this.

Thanks Chris, I pulled it apart yesterday and the clutches looked good, along with the gears and the springs/cage.  I think it was rebuilt sometime as the trust washers were steel, thinking they were originally copper, and there were 2 shims on one side and 3 shims on the other side to make up for a little ware on the pinion and spider gears.  I had a hard time getting it back together.  I still have to get the thrust washers in there and put the spring cage back in.  I guess Tom of tom's differential does not put the springs back in; but Fredie of big gear head on TC puts the springs back in.

I have always put the springs back in on the ones I have done. I just don't think they would hold as strong without them?
