I think I've mentioned on the forum that my brother ordered a new 396 El Camino in 1967. It wasn't an SS396 so it didn't have the SS badging on the grill nor the SS hood. I guess the SS trim was not available as an option.
From ChevelleStuff.net: "Although the El Camino could be ordered with any 396 engine, there are no SS396 1967 El Caminos; no SS396 badging, no Super Sport hood and no SS396 rocker panel moldings. A 396-optioned El Camino would have the 396 Turbo-Jet flags on the front fender however."

There was a nicely restored blue 67 396 El Camino I used to see a lot at the shows a few years back. I thought it was very nice and Karl's blue 66 reminds me of it.
It would be nice to own both of these cars. http://tinyurl.com/qh4w9t9
