The story goes like this: I bought an old 66 ragtop in about 1982. It was rusted up to the beltline, and I only got about a year's worth of use out of it. I kept everything but the basic body shell, and for $50 I got a '67 hardtop roller. I added the doors, fenders, bumpers, trim etc, from the convertible and Voila! Instant car. Then race fever gripped me and I sold it to build something faster (a v8 Pinto, as it turned out. DOH!) Anyway, I now have the spiritual replacement for that old ragtop, assuming that the old gal got turned into about 13 Corollas and some sardine cans. But I know the hardtop is out there somewhere, and with any luck, no longer has the same paint job (look at the photos and you'll see why). If anyone you know might have this car now - and I believe that it is still in MN - I would sure love to go visit it. Here is a picture from 1985:
Do you have a VIN or any old paperwork from it like insurance info?

I don't have the VIN. I have an old picture with the license plate, but the DMV tells me that they don't have any info about license plate numbers from the '80s. I have tried my old insurance agency from those days, but they don't have records back that far either. The guy I sold it to sold it off to somebody from Mankato, or at least sold it through an ad in the Mankato Free Press paper in probably '87 or thereabouts. The roller was a '67 138 car that I got up near Hibbing somewhere - just the shell, stripped of doors, front clip, everything - so someone might have re-worked it as a '67 SS car. Anything is possible.

Good Luck John. I found the car I bought new in 1965 for sale last summer up in Parkers Prairie for $4000. The only thing that looked any good was the vin and cowl tags. Motor, trans, and 12 bolt gone. Hood, Buckets and console gone along with most trim. All rusted, bad fenders, door, quarters, and you have to know the trunk and floors were probably junk along with a rusted out frame. I see it was still listed for sale on racing junk.com last week.
Looks like it is gone, no longer listed on Dan's site, I wonder if I will see the vin and cowl tags on it or another 66 someday.

Jim - that's got to be a little like losing a family member. I didn't have the chance to buy mine new, but it was 16 when I was, and just an old car that nobody else wanted.
Posting the photos was just in hopes that someone on here would happen to recognize them. I doubt that the car made it to the scrapyard; someone has it in a barn or a garage somewhere. I abused it pretty badly with the plastic hood scoop and the stripes, but I was a kid, and that is what was appearing in "hot rod" at the time. Stock was the height of boring - I remember junking the factory AM radio to put in a tape deck. I just paid $40 for a BROKEN factory AM radio. Hindsight.

I believe the knobs are missing, not sure if it is a 66 or 67. I am leaving tomorrow for duck hunting, I will check next week. Knobs are available aftermarket. About the only thing I am looking for a a 6 coded rim.

I don't know what a 6 coded rim is, but I am willing to bet that I don't have one. I do have cold beer, though, which has to be a good substitute. And, I think the 66 and 67 radios were pretty much the same except for the knobs. In any case, I'd be thrilled with a working 67. I figure: you really can't hear a damn thing in my car, what with the missing roof, the noisy exhaust, the whistling where the weatherstripping used to be, and me running my mouth. An AM radio is as good as anything.
Good luck with the ducks. We are headed to the cabin in Grand Rapids for the weekend in my ragtop. 2 kids, 2 adults, 1 dog, and 1 car that is a proving ground for new rattles and scary noises. Thank god for AAA.

Andy was Andrew when I knew him, and our dads both worked at the same college. We lived about two blocks away from each other, and he did introduce me to the Suburbs - that's about the only story I remember. If I had any incriminating stories, I have certainly forgotten them by now (along with all of the embarrassing stories about myself!)
