Is this possible to change the code from say a 8966 to a 8985 on an old gm ignition cylinder? No locksmiths here in town that I can call. Seems to me that I recall you can take the cylinder apart and do something to change the code; but not sure.
Thanks

I should be able to do it. I code cylinders all the time at work and the older cars aren't any more difficult. provide me with a good key and cylinders and I should be able to do it. About 2 months ago, I refreshed a full set for a guy with a musclecar era vehicle. message me if you're interested.

Got it done yesterday, a locksmith in Red Wing was able to do it. Thanks for the offer. Evidently someone had put a 67 cylinder and lock in my 66 at some time. The 67 key and cylinder are different than the 66 key and cylinder. I got a Cylinder out of an old 66 chevelle and an old key with a coded knockout in place from another early chevy that was correct for 66.

What is different between the 66 and 67 cylinders? I have a cylinder out of a 67 Lemans and fit perfectly fine in the existing 66 lock housing.

Up though 66 both the trunk and ignition key would fit into either cylinder. In 67 they changed the ignition cylinder so that you could not put the trunk key in by mistake. So in 67 they have two different blanks, A for the ignition/door and B for the trunk/glove box. If you have a 67 cylinder a 66 or earlier key will not fit into the cylinder. If you have a 66 cylinder a 67 ignition key will not go in.
Not sure; but I think the code on a 66 cylinder will be four numerical digits. On a 67 the code will be three numbers and a Letter.
