I have an extra '67 style shifter hump that would work with that.

So I could'nt help myself I saw this on craigslist and had to have it. It is a richmond 5 speed. This is the 1:1 5th gear unit not the overdrive. It has a 3.27 first gear which will get it off the line nicely. This will work perfect with the 3.08 8.5 rear end I want to put in the chevelle. It is brand new the guy said he bought it mocked it up in his car but ended up takng it back out and went a different direction. It came with a Long brand shifter and brand new clutch. This is a direct replacment for a muncie it has the same bellhousing bolt pattern and driveshaft length. It uses a t-400 output shaft so I will have to change it but I need to have my driveshaft shortened for the other rear end anyway.
I've heard those are really strong. That should be a nice ratio too. Nothin' like rowing through the gears. I like the auto for cruising, but there's still some shifting left in my blood for someday in the future...

Let’s see 3.27 1st and 3.08 in the back, that’s like 4.10 coming out of the hole, be ready to shift and steer back to centerline; should be a gas to drive with a nice small block.

Yes I think it will be a great combination with the 327 that I want to build for it later. It should even be fun behind the 283 for the time being. Just need to find some time to work on it.
