I came home to shingles all over the ground today from this wind... looks like I'm going to need to do something sooner rather than later.
Soooooooo.... do I want asphalt or steel?

At least you can get some insurance funds for it now if you so wish. I like the steel myself.

Man! It must be state-wide (the wind)... I had to keep about 10deg's "Left Rudder" into the Green Mary to keep it between the lines on the way home!
The only thing I'd be concerned about with steel is the potential noise.... you've got a nice finished space up there. Cosmetically you can't really see the roofline from the road.

The steel will last longer but cost much more up front. If you are concerned about cost, re-shingle and it will be good for 15 years. That will give you time to save up for the steel NEXT time.
John is right about the noise....Even a gentle rain sounds like a storm in my shop and when it pours, it's LOUD !!

When you get cost estimates on your roof replacement, get one for steel you might be surprised.
You do not live in there so noise should not be a factor. Unless you take a direct hit from a major storm, you will not replace it in your lifetime. Check with your insurance company, they may offer a discount for not using shingles.

Well, now that I can see it in the daylight, it looks like all the shingles that blew off came from the small garage... That roof was the best one on the property.

Hmmmm... lost a couple off the house too. I was hoping to get 4-5 more years out of that roof. With all the peaks and valleys, I'd probably leave that one to the professionals.

Have your insurance look at them and see what they say. They may only pay for a partial repair on the house but a complete re-roof of the garage.
