I missed out on all that fun. I failed my induction physical in 1970 because of my hearing loss and didn't get to go to Nam with my friends.

I seriously considered it while in college. My dad's dad served with patton, my mom's stepdad was in the navy, my mom's mom was in the army but didn't go into details, always said it was classified.
My dad actually talked me out of it, of all the people. When he was in high school, he contacted State Representative Don Frazer about getting a recommendation to West Point. Unfortunately he was told that all spots for that year were full, but there was still openings for the US Naval Academy at Annapolis, so he applied and was granted a spot. He didn't pass the physical due to a cyst on his tailbone. While thatwas in proecss, he was offered a commendation to the merchant marine if he wanted it. He declined and went into college instead. I have his letters of recommendation as well as the announcement in the school paper.
My wife was all set to go into the Army out of high school, but didn't pass the physical (and she was in pretty good shape at the time as a state level swimmer).
Chris P-remember the recruiters harassing us at work and out riding around?

I look older than I am. It's a gift. I'll be 46 in November. I graduated high school in 84 when I was still 17.

In the army when they still had a draft.
I could've lived a long time without the Village People reminder Mr. Dashboard....

I was the first year of the "lottery" draft. My number was picked early...
These other guys talk about graduating in the mid 80's. I'd already been married for 9 years with a kid, and divorced for 4.
I was long gone and overseas when you went through basic. I went through in June. Holy hell was it hot!
Spent my first three years lugging around an M16 and 240 rounds of ammo. Got retrained and spent my last 5 years in Texas repairing crypto equipment.
