I was wondering if any one has any suggestions on exhaust systems. I will be going with three inch no matter what i pick.Im not sure if I want to run the exhaust full length of the car. I was thinking about having them run out before the rear end.I just thought this might be the right group of guys to ask for suggestions. Thanks guys

I had an x pipe to large case mufflers and torque tech tails (all 3")... The tailpipes rusted right through... If I ever did that again Id go stainless.

I have a 557 bbc Lemons headers 4" collector to 3" exhaust with H pipe 3" in 3" out flowmasters with turn downs in front of rear axle. All straight no bends. +straight to reduces HP loss great at the strip. +Lemons headers are great but very very $$. I was fortunate they came with the car when I got it. They go on and off easy and are 2 1/8" pipes to 4" collector. and fit great. I had Welded in O2 sensors and Moroso exhaust evac tubes. +very easy to get on and off to fix things or want to run open headers. I have never ran open headers accept for the first start up. -should consider get a custom made tranny mount as it touches and vibrates and sometimes can hear rub a little when I back out of the garage. +/- Loud son says. barly hold a converstaion. But you can really enjoy the sound of the big engine thumping. -kicks up dust like crazy which actuallly I am ok with a little dust on my car : ) People at car shows will hate you. I had an experience at local cruise in once where a guy did no like the dust my car kicked up next to his white 2009 Camaro convertable. What I do not like is it gets dust all over under the car so when I wash it I have to really clean under the car too. I have a gravel drive way so you see the dust cloud when I pull in and back out. + if memory serves me the exhaust is either flow master or Summit racing brand you can get it and bolt in pretty easy. No rust yet.
If I were to do it agian may even consider 3 1/2" but once again would most likley need cutom Tranny mount to clear. H vs X get whatever would fit your setup. The H in my setup is much easier to deal with. I like easy on easy off. What headrers you running ? I agree 3" is the smallest I would go
How is your 540 setup/build ? what headers ?

I did the dumps in front of the rear axle ONCE and that will never happen again. The noise and drone inside is terrible. All my cars get full pipes to the rear. I second Tony on stainless. The little these cars get driven causes the steel pipes to rust out.
Are you looking at preformed aftermarket or custom made ??

Im not quite sure if I will be going aftermarket or have someone custom make them. If any what has any suggestions on what mufflers to use also that would be great. I still have a few months before I purchase. Its going to be a birthday gift for my dad.

I have a Pypes stainless system on my '67 Camaro. Headers back with X pipe and race pro mufflers. It's surprisingly quiet at idle and part throttle but sounds very healthy once I get my foot in it.... Tail pipes exit in original position just behind the rear tires and it's not too loud on the highway.
My '66 Chevelle appears to have a Flowmaster system without X and is a little louder at idle and sounds throaty. Tail pipes exit straight out the back and is quite enough to listen to the radio on the highway.

I personally like the magnaflow sound, it seems a little deeper than flowmaster but they are very popular also. Had Dynomax originally and the drone was terrible and others here have echoed that opinion. I agree with the others, full length system with an X or H pipe.

I recently switched from the Flowmasters to the Dyno flow as well. Even in the convert it was too loud to hold a conversation. With the Magnaflow's, quieter in the cab, and still a very nice sound.

I would recommend 3 inch pipes with that many cubes. Pypes seems to be the best value for an exhaust system even though any of a big performance exhaust manufacturers will fit just fine.

The quality is good and the fit was good except the tail pipes. They don't follow the originals very well and were very difficult to keep from rattling on the body. Chevelles have much more room behind the tire for pipes to exit in the original location and I wouldn't be afraid to order another set for my Chevelle.

Thanks Mitch, We are looking to make some noise so we are just looking at every different option. I remember seeing these guys at car craft and another guy we go with purchased a set for his chevelle but hasn't put them on yet.
