I am going to get moving on my orange 70 again this fall and finish it over the winter.
I repainted it in May or June (can't remember the exact day or week) it still needs to be cut and buffed.
The engine is complete I just need to take it to the dyno. The engine is a 1970 3963512 454 block that is stroked and bored to a 505 cubi. We're geussing it will be in high 500 HP and torque range. Carb is a 830 Holley. Intake is the stock Winter's aluminum. (that will cost me some HP)
I plan to make the car look stock with the exception of maybe headers, tranny and bigger tires. I'll detail it like the 69 maybe a little more.
I plan to install power windows and maybe AC. Have mid 3's gear ratio. Basically I want a comforatble driver that will get up and go and I can run it on the 1/4 mile.
I currently have a 1967 convertible Impala at my house that has a 496 that has an automatic in it. It has a ton of power and is fun to drive. It got me thinking that since I have the 69 with the muncie I'm thinking about running a automatic tranny in the 70.
I am looking for some advice on automatics in regards to overdrives and being able to take the power range that I think I'll have.
So any suggetions would be appreciated.

I have been looking at both the 700r4 and 2004r for overdrive transmissions. The 700 has a very low ist gear at 3.06 if you want to get out of the hole quickly but then a long second gear. The 200 is more evenly spaced between the gears and 1st isn't quite so low. I guess it depends on how you want to use and drivbe the car. Many schools of thought on strength of either. Seems the 700 is stronger than the 200 new but the 200 can be built stronger than a 700. I have talked to Master Transmission in Rosemount and they are running several cars at 600+ horsepower with their 200s. Seems like a lot of power thrown at that tranny but they will warranty their work for two years. Several other tranny shops around the country are building up 200s pretty beefy but they are not cheep. In cotrast, I talked to Monster Transmission in Florida the other day and they said they would not sell me a 200 for my 450HP car as I would break it the first day. Go figure. Let me know how your research goes I would be very interested.

I have a 700 behind a blown small block making pretty close to 500 ft lb of torque and it has held up great. But I did upgrade mine with a cyrogenic hardened input shaft, upgraded sunshell and the 5 pinion plantery sets to make sure it was going to live. I have not had any problems with the gear spread on the 1-2 shift, if the motor is making good power I don't think it is that big of deal.
Bowtie has a 700 behind his 400 horse small block and his was more or less a stock rebuild with a shift kit and his has held up fine.
For a cruiser I think either transmission will work just fine but with the power level you are at it will require some hard parts to make sure something is not going to break if you plan to drag race it.

now that mine has a trans-go kit in it, I am happy. I did have the vette servo and basic performance stuff done when it was rebuilt, but nothing beyond what everyone says to be done. I don't exactly beat on my stuff, but I certainly don't baby it either. I've had mine for almost 10 years now but I don't drive a ton. I will be doing more driving now after tuning and stuff too. Budget has been killed by other stuff that also needed to be done.

What a bunch of morons. The Grand National guys have been boosting up to 500+ HP since they were new using the 200R4 trans. Even if they were modified or not, Monster Transmission should know that.
Given the trouble you have had with the 454. I wouldnt trust anything other then a reputable local builder over a mail order any day of the week.

One of the trans shops offers a close ratio option for the 700, brings it very close to the 200r4s ratio.
Ive seen a few guys at events that have pretty beefed up 700's. So that can be an option as well. 200's are actually not the easiest to find. They are out there and common, but for some reason, dont pop up on a regular basis. Likely because the 200 has been out of production since somtime around the late 80's IIRC.

Thanks for the input. I am going to call Master Transmission and see what they would do and warrenty. I sent my parents to them a while back for their daily driver and they are happy with the results and the service.
