A couple of our finer members fought the bypass hose tooth and nail on mine during the intake swap (it did turn out nice though), and after looking at the post, the drilling the stat method seems much easier other than not looking stock without the hose.
I wonder how much the warming effect of the bypass is reduced by going from the hose to the 3 small holes in the stat?

Stan I drilled the three small holes in my thermostat. It did make some difference in temp and when it opened up.

Temp higher or lower? Opened up sooner or later?

I actually use a high flow stat with a hole already in it from the factory. Plus, I bought a trick little bypass sold by Cool Flex to match the custom hoses I plan to use. Its not stock appearance but looks very slick.

From the thread on TC:
A few years ago I had one of those metal corrugated "CoolFlex" bypass hoses. It had been on the car for over a year with no problems. One morning, waiting in line to register for a car show I noticed the front windshield fogging up. Didn't give it much thought. When I finally got to my spot & opened the hood - SHOCK. The metal hose had a pinhole leak right in front aimed right at the fan. Well, with the engine running & the cooling system under pressure the fan just sprayed the coolant everywhere. Ruined my day and any shot at a trophy. Also ruined the finish on my new brake booster.
No hose = no leaks!
Just a thought...

Stan, do you have the pre-curved hose or just a piece of heater hose ?

That's why it fought you and has the kink in the middle. Get a preformed hose and it is much easier to install and looks right.

Where might one get one of these molded hoses?

Most of the on-line vendors have them and I think I got mine from NAPA.

Any autoparts store should have a good selection of 90 degree bent hoses that size.

Stan, I have used the pre-bent hose for 6 yrs now with no problems. On advice from a guy (expert) on TC, I am using a factory set up with the auto zone 180 that I drilled a couple of little holes in. Allows a little flow when engine temp is bellow 180, allows just a bit more flow when temp above 180. No over heating problems now that I have the timing advance set correctly for my cam an the distributor re-curved. Thinking about going to 195.
I've had other discussions on this with BBC owners, and saw this thread on TC today that was interesting: http://www.chevelles.com/forums/showthread.php?t=375147
