Just an FYI for those following my engine saga, GM is sending out a replacement engine. With any luck I won't have the same issue. Fingers crossed.

Does Fridley have an engine dyno? I doubt it, but it would be nice to have it dyno'd like you did originally, so that you know what you have. Especially at GM's cost!
In my past life as an engine buyer... I know there are dyno tests that can be run to check oil consumption too. Usually it is a longer duration test and the engine racks up a lot of hours, so that probably isn't something you would want to do.
I'm guessing GM figured out that it is going to cost them less to replace the entire engine than continue to sink money into one that still needs more internal work.
Here's to hoping this ends your engine saga Jon!

Ask GM if you can buy the oil burner for $500...I'd take it in a heartbeat for that...

The Chev. dealership does not have a dyno and I don't think GM will pay for one. I have questons about breaking the engine in on a dyno and I have to talk to the service manager tomorrow about it. The service writer said he would help make arrangements for a dyno but thought I would have to pay. So many questons.
Mitch, they want the engine back to go to engineering to see what the issue really is. Nice try though!

Heck, I can tell them what the problem is .......the rings didn't seat.
R&R is just up the road a couple miles for a dyno break-in.

Applied Dyno broke mine in last Spring after I had the heads rebuilt and replaced the top end. It was probably the best break in I ever had done as it was much easier to monitor the vitals during break-in instead of trying to do it while in the car. Best $300 I ever spent.

R&R did my dyno runs, good place and Ron knows his stuff. He's been mentioned in the past in magazines. R&R also did all the dyno work for us when we were producing our own crate engines.
As Jon said, GM won't pay for a dyno. GM will want that engine back, it was replaced under warranty. The only way they wouldn't want it back is if it was "field scrapped" which means the block gets destroyed. I have seen it, it is final and no Mitch, I can't slide one past.
I ordered Jon's engine today. I did it by phone and spoke to someone directly, not the automated system. There are 20 in process of being shipped and I was told they should ship this week, there are less than 20 on order so his should be part of that order.
Jon's engine will come out tomorrow and get ready for return to GM.

I thought GM crate engines came already broken in out of the box?

Not broken in, but pre-run on natural gas I believe. Just enough to make sure it spins. I don't know what they do for long block engines, though.

Chris, 3700 miles. And to answer Bryans question about 12 qts. The bright side is I never had to "change " oil!
The warranty is covered, but I don't know what it is going to cost me for Bryan's babysitting fee while it is in the shop!

Pardon the pun but holey smokes. I thought I had consumption problems when I chose to park my 66. Thats just not right.
Make sure you do your research on good break in oil with a good amount of Zinc in it.

After all this BS, the only oil that goes in it for the first few oil changes should be:
- exactly what General Motors specifies. - Provided by a GM Dealer. - poured into the engine by a "Certified GM Mechanic". - the oil level checked by the same "Certified GM Mechanic".
then Jon, provide them a oil fill cap with a little hole drilled in the edge...
- then have the "GM Certified Mechanic" safety wire, and lead seal the cap.
