I replaced the mufflers on the Chevelle today with some Thrush turbos, while trying to beat the snow storm so that I could take it for a drive and see if I got rid of the droning from the Magnaflows. Just needed a couple more hours, but the snow started just I was finishing up!
It does sound about the same at idle, but is substantially quieter when the engine is revved as the Thrush are cross flows instead straight through, so I think these will be better. Now I'll probably have to wait until May to find out...

Yep, there's an X pipe.

Even though the salt is down... I took the Chevelle for a drive today since the roads were dry. The droning is much less, and on the highway all I hear is the engine and no exhaust! So, I'm pretty happy with the muffler change.
Got a few strange looks today while on the road, and it ran suprisingly good at 25 degrees outside. Carbs do still work in the cold like back in the day.
I also heard a rumor that there was a particular blue '69 convertible cruising north today on I35 to get some miles on a new engine, but that wasn't confirmed...

Snitches everywhere, this is worse than when I was working, at least I
don't have to pay them.
Yes, the "Blue" Chevelle did hit the road today. I put on a little over 300
miles. Crazy you say? Well maybe. With the never ending saga of JonH
vs GMPP I had to put on miles to see if the latest "fix" would cure my oil
consumption problem. GMPP sent out a new set of heads that were
installed Friday. The bad news is 300 miles and 3/4 quart of oil, same as
last time after they replaced the umbrella seals with PC seals. Better
than the original 300 miles to the quart. So, after removal of the splash
shield, new intake gaskets, new valave seals and now new heads I am
no better off than I was other than I am $300 poorer for the gas I ran
through the car "testing" everytime GMPP thought they had it fixed. I just
got back from the local self service car wash that ate my quarter
collection. Although the roads were clear I thought it best to srcub it top
to bottom (and underneath too). It is now in the garage with the heaters
going to get it good and dry and then goodnight for the winter. Monday
it is back with GMPP to see what the next step is. I feel it will be a new
engine as I don't believe they will pay for a rebuild although that is what
I would prefer. Gee, I wonder if they will pay for a dyno like I originally
did, etc. I doubt it.

It's amazing how long they will screw around trying to fix an oil consumption level like that with heads. It's a ring issue. I've never seen heads eat that much oil....
Glad you're happy with the new muffs, Stan. The drone was BAD before.

Jon, I'm sure you are terribly frustrated. I know I would be!
Maybe it's time for a 3 way conference call with you, GM, and the mechanic to resolve this once and for all, including reimbursement for all the gas, time, & frustration of GM's warranty process?
At a minimum, I would think they could give you a $200 gift certificate for GM Performance Parts or something like that.
IMO-Time to be the 'tough as nails negotiator' that I know you are!

Great now I’m a snitch, thanks Stan.
I was out hanging a Christmas wreath on the front door and for the first time ever the blue car (with the steel top) was able to sneak right up to my driveway without me hearing it arrive. Stan would say he’s trying to remove the offensive drone (CIA would like one back) but I think it’s his age showing. He was even a bit slow getting in and out of the car.
Guess l need to install new batteries in my hearing amplifiers.

Well I know someone who GM said there was nothing wrong with his engine, they all KNOCK like that. They told him he did'nt understand cars and engines, after they informed him about how clueless he was they asked what he did. Can you say the big shots nearly crapped when they found out he was one of the tech inspectors for NHRA. OOPs hey guess what there may possibly be something wrong with that engine and GM would like to install a new engine.

I was driving late friday night and thought about how little snow there was on the roads which could enable safe driving without the worry of getting salt all over. I wish our winters were like this the entire time.

I got to drive Bryans chevelle to his new digs this afternoon. Tried to avoid all the puddles. Don't envy all the unpacking he gets to do this week though.

Jon-sorry to hear that it still isn't fixed. Unfortunately, there's not much more I can do or point you towards at this time either. Stick with it.
Chris P=-thanks for all the help. Very odd to see my car being driven. It did sounds pretty nasty at 20 degrees and no choke-Like a helicopter.
