Got a call about an hour ago. My next-door neighbor (to the north) Tom died tonight. He had two surgeries this week and just didn't have it in him to fight it out anymore...
His health has been poor for the last few years, and we've kinda adopted them (Tom & Shirley) - doing fixit jobs, yardwork, etc. - their kids aren't around and/or don't do much.
Another good guy called up. I'll miss him.

Sorry to hear that and our condolences go out to the family too. That is very good of you to have been a help in his time of need, John. I don't see that happening much anymore. Everyone seems to be too busy with their own stuff, as appears to be the case with their own children. I'm sure Shirley will appreciate the continued help.

That's too bad John. I know when my mom had died and before my dad moved, his neighbors helped him out a lot. LIttle things like mowing the yard or shoveling meant so much to him. There was one neighbor who would drop off a styrofoam cooler full of small pre-cooked meals every so often. Nobody ever asked if they could, they just did. Nice people like that aren't as common anymore.

Sorry to hear that John. I know you were a good neighbor.
There's other folks I know that still help their ederly neighbors or widows next door. I remember Chad telling me he spends a couple of hours every weekend mowing his next door neighbors yard since she can't do it herself.
