It amazed me to read that scrap yards do not require proof of ownership of older cars. I think the state should start holding scrap yards partially responsible. Ill bet these yards get at least a handfull of stolen cars a week with the way the law is written.
Having had an El Camino stolen, reading that article really ticks me off that there is a loophole in the law like this.

Changing the law only means a slight delay for the thieves while they sawzall it to pieces before they take it in... lots of junk old cars out there without titles, so changing the law would just be a PITA for rightful owners of non-registered junk cars, and would do nothing to stop the thieves.

I would think receiving and destroying private property would already be illegal..

Well something has to be done. The way it stands right now. Its way too easy for thieves to get away with this.

Read the article this morning. It seems the problem is just with one dealer, Metro Metals. Article mentions that Joe's revquires a lot more of information from the owner. With a law change, at least they would not be able to throw it on a trailer and receive a cash payment the same day. But who really thinks our legislatures can get anything done right?? Expecially that 2 ton from Buffalo. Is she worth $200 a ton??

Like Tony said, receiving stolen property is already a crime. The solution isn't more laws, it's enforcing the ones we already have... prosecute a few yard owners and they'll stop buying anything that's suspicious. If thieves can't sell it, they won't steal it.

Ruben Rosario did not talk to me for this article and I have no plans to introduce any bill related to this issue. My husband's name is Mark, and he does not own John's Auto Parts. Melissa Hortman, State Representative.
Gee the paper did not have facts checked at all but threw the State Rep under the bus.
Apparently the Meth heads have run out of copper.
