Since this is still the F150 trend, look what followed me home. I always wanted a pickup for utility but never had the space for one; since Stan’s not close by anymore to assist with the procurement delivery mission and Jon said just buy a pickup and I now have the space, I got one.
It was owned by a mature gentleman (that means even older than me) the state of Ohio took away his driver’s license and it’s been sitting for some time. 2002 clean, no rust, well equipped, even has the adjustable gas and brake pedals for Angie. It also has some electronic trailer brake thing under the dash that I’ll try to figure out one day
The story of how it came to be mine and the guy I bought it from will need to be told another time. It’s long and I think interesting; he had several muscle cars in his past including a 1970, L78 Chevelle and a Harley in fact it was the Harley that lead to his losing his license.
Word of warning - be careful hosing down the engine compartment... the COP units seem to not like getting drenched. Every time I'd do the engine bay it seemed that I'd have to replace one within a day or so. (Not a bad job, just a bytch 'cause the fuel rails are in the way.)

They feed off donuts and bad karma. Typically try to avoid, especially after 2 am.

Revisiting this thread...
I'm looking at 2010+ Silverado 1500 Crew Cab 4x4 trucks with 5.3L/6spd auto and towing package.
Lots to choose from out there, but finding specific options is kind of difficult... anyone know a good used vehicle locator that lets you get more specific on mechanicals?

Most dealerships have a person who can do specific seaches for vehicles based on the build. Call us www.friendlychev.com and tell them what you want. We have a gal Janelle who's job is just doing "dealer trades" to get specifically built models that may be located at other dealers. I don't know the exact process, wether it's searched by build codes or by packages, but they can usually find what you want.
I typically send people to salesman Mike Swords because he's good, but whomever you do, drop my name. Thanks!

Have you done the Auto trader search ?? It lets you pick everything right down to the color.
I've looked around on Findcars, autotrader, and carsoup... Findcars and autotrader let you pick the number of doors, and all of them let you pick color and number of cylinders and 4x4 and sort by price, etc. It would be helpful if they let you sort out the 4.8s from the 5.3s. I don't expect the dealers to all enter in everything down to the gear ratio, but it would be nice to at least kick out the 4.8s, especially when searching further out than just the midwest.

When I was looking for my 2000, I had to call a lot of the ads because they omitted the engine size. I only called the 800 numbers....

Do they list the VIN? 8th digit from the left is the engine, otherwise give me a VIN and I can decode it with ratios, etc. Give me a list of them even, no biggie, takes seconds to do.
When I "acquired" my '88 IROC about 8 years ago, I had entered a bid and was watching the counter go down during the last 2 minutes of the auction on ebay. My wife walked up and said "don't you DARE buy that car", so with 6 seconds left, I pushed the mouse away but my finger accidentally clicked the left button. The house was VERY quiet for the next 7 days...
Mitch, to the casual reader that somewhat implies that you released one of your carriages back to the general population at some time in your past life.
“but my finger accidentally clicked the left button” now that’s an interesting technique, can you use that one more than once?
I sold the IROC to buy the GTO....
Um, the finger slip resulted in a seven day "penalty", if you know what I mean, and I haven't had any desire for that to happen again.
That can be good or bad depending on how you take it!

I put a deposit down on this one today.
Just have to wait for them to do some paint work to fix the blistered paint where the previous owner attached mudflaps.
It has the important stuff... 6.2L, 6-speed, 3.73 gears, HD axle, HD cooling, factory trailer brake controller, and room for the kiddos in the back seat. It's a 2011 with 53,000 on it.
My first ever vehicle with a warranty.

As a side note here, I took some of Bryan's advice and tried to get my local dealer involved in locating a truck for me.
As much as I wanted to support Friendly, I figured it would be more convenient to go local in Rochester, and also support a business that has given me some work. There is a Chevy dealer in Rochester that just built a new Subaru showroom a few years ago. I designed all the windows in the Subaru showroom and when they remodeled the Chevy showroom, I designed all those windows as well. Then changed jobs during that project, and managed the fabrication of all their windows too.
I went in, asked for quotes on a new one equipped like this one, and also asked for them to help locate a used one for me... then nothing. No calls, no emails, no contact whatsoever... guess they didn't want my money. I know 6.2s are hard to find, but they couldn't even get me a quote on a new one?

I didn't know the 6.2 was available in a 1500. I'm assuming you won't be using this as your DD, as the mileage isn't good. That Miata will get you to work and back.

I'll drive the Miata as weather and work/daycare schedules allow, but the truck will be my regular DD most of the time.
The 2011 6.2s are rated at 18mpg which is no worse than my 2000 5.3

The 6.2 was ONLY available in the 1500. They're rated at 403hp/417tq and get 18mpg (some sources say 19mpg)
The gas engine in the 2500s and 3500s is the 6.0 rated at 360hp/380tq and get around 13mpg.

Got it home last night, getting 16mpg... not quite as good as I hoped for, but had the cruise set at around 77mph most of the way. Might do better with less lead in my foot.
We stopped at a private junk collection on the way back and spent about 3 hours looking at stuff. Some Model T and A stuff, and a lot of trucks from the 30s-60s. I bought a bunch of factory service manuals from him, and probably will be going back for more.
